Summary:
Learn about the different types of weaves and complete a weaving assignment.

Materials:
1. Weaves power point presentation
2. Weaves lecture notes
3. Textile cards-weaves
4. Samples of all the weaves discussed (enough for each student)
5. Yarn, ribbon, or paper strips, and double stick tape

Background For Teachers:
Be familiar with the power point presentation and the weaves lecture notes.

Student Prior Knowledge:
None.

Intended Learning Outcomes:
Students will create 2 different types of weaves and understand the characteristics of other weaves.

Instructional Procedures:
1. Explain that throughout history, fabric has contributed to the decorative beauty of particular eras. For centuries, fabric has been used to cover walls, drape windows and beds, and upholster chairs and sofas. One of the most important factors in creating beautiful fabrics is how they are woven. By changing the weave of a fabric, the total look and use of the fabric can be changed.

2. Show samples of different weaves to the students while reviewing the information from the power point presentation and lecture notes. Also have available the swatches for students to attach to the Textiles-weaves worksheet. Have them also complete the information on the worksheet while listening to the rest of the lecture.

3. Give students some time to attach all the samples of fabric given.

4. Explain that the students will be creating a women sample of 2 weaves using paper, yarn, or ribbon. Attach the weaves to a piece of paper, and have the students display their work. You could take this one step further and have the students create a pillow top from a satin weave, and then put the pillow together during class time.

Assessment Plan:
Students will be assessed from the weaving assignment. 2 weaves must be completed, and in the correct pattern.
