Judging Reliability of Information on Websites:
When using a website or assigning students to use websites for nutritional information, make sure you have a reliable source. Some ways to test the reliability of the information are:

  • If the information seems too good to be true, it probably is. Double check the facts somewhere else. The same goes if the information is questionable.
  • Websites sponsored by food producers or distributors could have a bias to sell their product. Similarly, if a study referenced on the internet was funded by a commercial interest, there may be a bias in the study. Just double-check facts to make sure they’re accurate.
  • Make sure to look at dates on information found on the web. Look for the most recent and reliable source.
  • Look for experts: RD (registered dietician), LD (licensed dietician), medical professionals, family and consumer sciences teachers, etc.
  • Go to websites sponsored by federal, state, and local governments; hospitals; and professional health organizations.
