Bridgerland Technical College | Canvas Supports Visibility into Student Progress

Bridgerland Technical College provides an essential path for Utahns to develop their work skills. Students there pursue certification programs in a wide range of fields, and Canvas is critical to helping them stay on track.

Josh Hveem is Director of Instructional Systems Design at the Logan-based college. As he explained, Bridgerland Tech takes an individualized approach to supporting student progress. “Our students are all moving at slightly different paces. It’s difficult for a single teacher to keep track of 50 students across 20 courses.”

To help educators meet this challenge, Hveem discovered a way to use data from Canvas to show individual student progress in easy-to-read dashboards. The dashboards empower teachers and administrators to reach out to students about the last steps needed to earn the certificates they’re pursuing and, where needed, to get them more support and structure.

“They can see all the students in their program, who’s coming up on a course end date, and their progress,” he said. “So this is something that can help an administrator really quickly diagnose what needs to be going on in their program.”
