Unit II - Hunger at Home

Pre-Assessment
As a pre-assessment of the student's knowledge of hunger in the United States and locally do GRAFFITI.

Supplies needed:
Poster paper, markers, 4-6 pictures of people who live in the United States.  These pictures can be found in such magazines as National Geographic, Times, U.S. & World Report, Life, etc.

Instructions:
Mount each picture on a piece of the poster paper.  Under each picture write a question.  (See possible questions listed below.)  Have the students go around the room and write their answers to the question on the poster paper.  When students have finished, read their answers and discuss as a class.

Possible pictures and questions:

  1. A homeless person:  What did I eat today?
  2. An average looking person:  Why am I malnourished?
  3. A hungry child:  Where do I live?  How much money does my family make each month?  Do I go to your school?
  4. a student:  All I ate today was a piece of toast and a candy bar.  Now it is 11:30 a.m.  How do I feel and how well will I do on my Math test today?
  5. A young woman:  Why did I go to bed hungry last night?
  6. Other possible questions:
    • How does this person feel?
    • How much money does this person make?
    • What will happen to this person tomorrow and what are you going to do about it?
