Teachers will need the computer lab and internet access. Printout of chart.doc for each student or group.

Background for Teachers

This is an opportunity for students to collaborate and create interesting book reports using the internet and Microsoft's Powerpoint presentation program. Students can use a novel they have read at school or at home. A basic Powerpoint tutorial is available below. A template will also be provided for students who are using powerpoint for the first time. Print out the chart.doc file and run copies for each group.

Student Prior Knowledge

Student should have some understanding of Powerpoint and have completed a novel prior to beginning this Presentation.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By creating 5 categories and 4 corresponding questions and answers, students will have a greater comprehension of the novel and its details. Students will also understand how a template can be used in Powerpoint to create a variety of different projects.

Instructional Procedures

  • When students are finished reading a novel they will get into groups and begin developing a Powerpoint presentation.
  • The first step will be to hand out the chart.doc file attached above to help students develop the 5 categories for their Jeopardy PP.
  • Possible categories can be seen in the attached Harry Potter powerpoint.
  • Other possible categories could include vocabulary words, comprehension questions...
  • Each novel presents different options for the categories. Take time with your students to develop meaningful categories before they start.
  • The next step is to list the four statements that will go into the boxes in order of difficulty. The easier ones will be worth 100 and the most difficult will be worth 400.
  • The first part of the problem is a statement such as "Harry's best friend at Hogwarts" It will be followed by placing "Who is Ron Weasley" in the answer box.
  • Students must be reminded that the answer should be stated " Who is" rather than just saying the name.
  • students should fill out the entire chart before entering the computer lab.
  • Once the students understand what the Jeopardy game is going to look like you can begin by opening the Jeopardytemplate.ppt document attached below.
  • You will see a template with the outline of the slides on the left and the first slide on the right.
  • Click and highlight the first blank and type in your category. Repeat for the other 4 categories. You can edit the text and make simple format changes here.
  • It is time to save your work. Arrow up to file and drag down to save as... Type in either the students name or the name of the book and save it to a folder. We recomend you use the N: drive for this project especially if you plan on using many pictures. (For directions on setting up a folder for your class on N: drive see the attached word document below)
  • Now you are ready to move to a new slide. Click on the little square on slide 2 Blank for 100. You should see the second slide appear on the right. Click and highlight the word Blank in the title and change it to match your first category.
  • Next highlight where it says click to add text. Type in your statement here.
  • Type the answer in a question format where it says "Type answer here." remember you can change the font and color at this point. Be careful not to let your students do too much with formatting until they have completed the content.
  • Move to Blank for 200 and repeat the steps above. Remember to save your work periodically. To move back and forth to different slides click on the square next to the number of the slide you want to edit.
  • To view the show and make sure that the links are correct arrow up to Slide Show on the menu bar and drag down to View Show. Use the space bar and the arrow to navigate and press Esc key to return to your editor.
  • If you want to delete a picture just click on it and it should be highlighted and then press the delete key. You can now insert pictures by arrowing up to insert and dragging down to picture and select either clip art or from file to insert your own picture.
