Summary

The student will draw a design that depicts Pueblo Pottery designs, by learning to contrast two elements, such as black with white.

Materials

  • White drawing paper 8.5" X 11.5"
  • pencil
  • black pastel

Background for Teachers

The teacher will read information on Pueblo Pottery designs, see bibliography. The teacher will make several photocopies of pottery designs depicted in reference books so the students may utilize them as visual aids. The teacher will encourage the students to experiment on there own to learn to utilize the art technique of contrast. Contrast is the use of two or more elements with a significant difference such as black with white. The teacher may apply the strategy used in Language Arts, which is to compare and contrast, by creating a Venn diagram.

Student Prior Knowledge

The student will know how to compare and contrast utilizing a Venn diagram. The student will have the ability to know what likenesses and differences are by comparing two characters in a story. The student will be able to transfer the knowledge to art by taking two elements, or color, black and white to design pueblo pottery. The student will know the two colors are light in color and dark in color. The student will know how to repeat this pattern by placing it side by side to design a Pueblo Pottery design.

Intended Learning Outcomes

The student will learn how to draw a Pueblo Pottery design by learning to contrast two elements, black with white. The student will draw a design that repeats, which will resemble a pottery design.

Instructional Procedures

  1. The student will sketch a few pottery designs by observing photo copies of Pueblo pottery designs. The student will select designs with two elements, white with black.
  2. The student will draw designs with lines and multiple shapes. The student will utilize the element of contrast by drawing with a pencil or pastel. The white background of the drawing paper will be recognized as black on white, which would resemble how black paint would be used on a white clay pot.
  3. The student will learn to draw lines side by side to show contrast.
  4. The student will select a few Pueblo pottery designs and draw a final draft of the design on white drawing paper. The student will learn how to select lines that are narrow, compared to lines that are broad.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

The students may compare and contrast the different types of Pueblo pottery designs, by separating them into Native American Tribes and the elements of color. Here are a few different types of elements; black on white, black on red(iron oxide), black on yellow ochre and white on black.

Assessment Plan

The student will select a few final drafts of the black on white Pueblo pottery designs by displaying them in the foyer during School Family Night.
