Summary

This lesson is a collaboration between the library media specialist and a FACS teacher.

Materials

  • Access to Pioneer Library, specifically the EBSCO database.
  • Consumer Report Competency Assignment Worksheet

Background for Teachers

This collaborative lesson plan addresses standards in both the library media curriculum and the CTE/FACS Adult Roles and Responsibilities curriculum. The FACS standard is "Identify consumer rights and responsibilities and identify effective practices for purchasing consumer goods, services, housing, and insurance." The library media standards are the first 5 steps of the Big 6 Information Literacy process.

Intended Learning Outcomes

The student will identify resources for doing research before purchasing a product. They will compare and contrast brands, features, and prices before making a final decision to purchase.

Instructional Procedures

  • Students are asked to identify and item valued at more than $100 that they would be interested in purchasing.
  • The library media specialist discusses the steps on the worksheet for using the EBSCO database on the Pioneer Online website using an example chosen by the class. (Note: We have found through experience that the most effective articles are those from Consumer Reports which contain comparison charts).
  • Students do independent research on their respective topics with help from the teachers.
  • Students analyze information to fill out data needed on the worksheet. (FACS teacher composed worksheet, while LMT added searching information.)

Assessment Plan

Students complete the worksheet and then do an oral discussion with either the FACS teacher or LMT about any challenges they encountered in the exercise.
