Summary

After students have completed part 1 then have them compare items in the classroom to the densities of the rocks that they measured in part 1.

Materials

  • triple beam
  • graduated cylinder
  • water displacement can
  • various items that can be measured in the classroom.
  • Rock Density 2 worksheet

Student Prior Knowledge

Students need to know how to measure volume by water displacement.

Instructional Procedures

  1. Stack up the rocks that you measured in part 1 of the Rock Density Lab according to their densities. Hold up some items from the classroom and ask if they were added to the stack where would they fit? How about items in their pockets?
  2. Have the students pick out 5 items and check with the teacher.
  3. Predict where the items would stack up.
  4. Conduct the experiment.

Assessment Plan
