In this activity students will predict and test the direction of the particle movement.


  • 1 piece of dialysis tubing 6 inches long
  • 2 pieces of string
  • 1 container
  • 10 ml starch solution
  • 25 ml weak iodine solution
  • 50 ml beaker
  • one-pint zip lock bag
  • starch solution 1/2 cup
  • larger container of weak iodine solution
  • worksheet

Background for Teachers

This can be done as a demo or a lab. A starch solution will be put into a zip lock bag. This is then put into a container of diluted iodine solution. Overnight the starch will darken. You could also do this by using dialysis tubing and the effect would take only 10 minutes.
