Summary

Students will be researching and exploring 6 systems of the human body: the muscular system, the skeletal system, the nervous system, the respiratory system, the circulatory system, and the digestive system. Students will be divided into 6 groups, where they will research a assigned body system. From there, each group creates a mini-lesson using the app, Explain Everything, to teach their assigned system, create a life-size diagram of their system, and create jeopardy questions for a class game.

Students will need access to a computer or iPad to research their body system. They will also be using a Webquest to find their information. They will be using their iPads and the app, Explain Everything, to create their mini-lesson.


Intended Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of 6 of the human body systems: he muscular system, the skeletal system, the nervous system, the respiratory system, the circulatory system, and the digestive system. They should be able to answer the following three questions: What major organs are part of each system?, What are the systems responsible for doing?, and How do the systems work?


Instructional Procedures

You will begin your lesson by explaining that the class will be researching and discovering information about the different human body systems. They will be participating in a class Webquest, where they will find the information they need in order to complete their assignments.

The teacher will then introduce the class to the Webquest, by opening up the site and projecting it to the whole class. Once projected, the teacher will read through the information on the Introduction and Task tabs. This information explains what their objective is, how to complete their tasks, and what information to pay close attention to.

The teacher will now divide their class into 6 different groups and assign each of them a human body system: digestive system, circulatory system, respiratory system, muscular system, skeletal system and nervous system. The teacher should explain and stress, that while gathering their information in their Research Packet, they need to focus on answering 3 questions: What organs are part of this system?, What is the system responsible for doing?, and How does the system work? The teacher's main job during the researching/creating phases will be to circulate the room and ensure misconceptions are not being made.

Have the groups start their research by clicking on the process tab that will link them to their information. The students will visit various sites and watch a video on their system. All of these links are in the process tab of the Webquest. While visiting these sites, students will record information in their Research packet.

Once they have that completed, the students will begin their work on their mini-lesson. They will be using their iPads and the app, Explain Everything, to create a video lesson to present to the class. Their lesson needs to answer the three questions they where supposed to focus on: What organs are part of this system?, What is the system responsible for doing?, and How does the system work? Students may choose how to present the information in the app, but the must answer those three questions.

Also included in this assignment, the students will create a life-size diagram of their body system. All they will need is a long sheet of butcher paper and a pencil. A student will trace another students body on the butcher paper. They will then draw the major organs/muscles/etc. that are included in their body system. They will use this as they present their lesson to the class.

With any extra time, the groups will create 3 questions to submit to the class Jeopardy game. They will write 3 questions, that include answers, based on their body system.

The students will present their lessons to the class. The students in the audience will fill in the information for the body system being presented. Students will turn in their Research Packet for grading.


Strategies for Diverse Learners

Those students who are gifted, or are ready for a challenge, may write a 3-4 paragraph essay on the human body system they researched answering the three guiding questions.


Assessment Plan

Websites

Students will be assessed on group work, content of research, their mini-lesson, and their diagram. They will be graded using the rubric from the Webquest. Students will need to have answered the three guiding questions: What organs are part of this system?, What is the system responsible for doing?, and How does the system work?
