Food And Nutrition I
1 class periods of 90 minutes each
At the start of the semester provide the students with a pretest to see what they know or don't know in the area of foods. Go over how to use and care for the range and refrigerator as a home assignment.
If available in classroom, show examples of a self-defrosting and a frost-free refrigerator.
If available, show examples of a manual clean, self-clean and continuous clean range.
Review the use and care booklets for self-defrosting and frost-free refrigerators and manual clean, self-clean and continuous clean ranges. Be familiar on how to use and operate appliances in the classroom for demonstration and discussion. Review the information given on the pretest.
Depending on the students' background, level of cooking, skills in the kitchen, food service experience will determine how much the student already knows or will be a review or new knowledge for them.
The student will know how to use and operate and clean the stove and refrigerator both at school and at home. The student will identify what they already know on the pretest, review the information or find there are things that are new that they will learn from taking the Foods I course.
For the Home Assignment and to use in the Foods lab:
Identify the differences between each, parts of appliances, cleaning methods, and cleaning solutions. Read and explain to the students the home assignment. Should take about 20 - 30 minutes depending how detailed you want to get.
Give pre-test and then correct orally. Use pre-test as a reference sheet for future reference. I do not grade the pre-test. Should take 30 - 40 minutes.
