Rocks

Activities at the Evaluate Level

Learners assess, test, justify, critique, rate, defend, prioritize, recommend, decide, choose, monitor, determine, and make judgments

As a class, think about all that you’ve learned about earth science and make a judgement about the 5 most important facts you’ve learned about each of these topics:
  1. minerals,
  2. rocks,
  3. the rock cycle,
  4. weathering,
  5. erosion, and
  6. soil.

Partner with another 4th grade class and have them compile a list as well.  Compare the two lists and decide if you would change any of your choices.

Defend this statement: Without soil, there would be no life on earth.
Monitor soil on your playground over a three-month period.
–From what you’ve learned about soil, what do you think is its most important aspect? Choose from the list below or determine your own idea. Justify your choice. (The 4 points below are from the Dr. Dirt website).
  • To many farmers, the most important thing about soil is that it produces crops that provide their livelihood.
  • To environmental engineers, the most important thing about soil is its ability to purify itself.
  • To engineers who build things, the most important thing about soil is its ability to support weight or loads. (The leaning Tower of Pisa leans because it was built on soil that could not support its weight.)
  • To people concerned about wildlife, the most important thing about soil is its role in providing habitat (food and shelter) for many wild animals and several endangered species.
  • To natural resources managers, the most important thing about soil is its ability to protect the environment.
