Wi-Fi, Network Upgrades Empower Public Libraries To Serve Their Communities
The UEN Wi-Fi Improvement Program is helping Utah libraries meet the growing demand for free public Wi-Fi in their communities.
Today’s public libraries offer more than books: they are hubs where Utahns access essential online resources for education and opportunity–job searches, public meetings, healthcare and more. UEN works with libraries to help them provide the technology services their communities need, including reliable, high-speed internet through a robust, statewide network.
UEN’s broadband network currently provides 91 public libraries with high-speed internet connections that smoothly accommodate heavy traffic. However, many of these libraries have had outdated or inadequate Wi-Fi hardware, meaning that patrons couldn’t experience the benefits of this speed when using their library’s Wi-Fi.
That’s why UEN launched the Wi-Fi for Libraries Program in January 2024 with support from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Through this program, 53 of the public libraries that receive internet service through UEN are expanding access to free, public Wi-Fi in the communities they serve.
This project is an important part of UEN’s ongoing work to support Utah public libraries. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, UEN administered a CARES Act project that helped 70 library locations provide 688 mobile hotspots for patrons to check out, allowing more Utahns to get connected during a critical time.
Library partners report that the UEN Wi-Fi Improvement Program has already had a positive impact on their capacity to provide free Wi-Fi in their communities.
