  • George vs. George: The Revolutionary War as Seen by Both Sides, by Rosalyn Schanzer; ISBN: 0792269993
The introduction sets the tone, introducing both George Washington and King George III, mentioning their differing views, and noting that every story has two sides. Warning - However, near the end the question is asked, "So what was happening to American civilians all this time?" The answer seems to be mayhem: people were tarred and feathered, women raped. Indians "tortured . . . whole families, and scalped the dead" and "honored their bravest victims by eating them." The American troops "showed off pairs of legging made from the skin of dead Indians." Given the book's highly illustrated format, this is too sensationalized for the age group, a jarring note in an otherwise solid offering.  Maybe skip those last few pages.

Indicators:

  1. Explain the role of events that led to declaring independence (e.g., French and Indian War, Stamp Act, Boston Tea Party).
  2. Analyze arguments both for and against declaring independence using primary sources from Loyalist and patriot perspectives.
  3. Explain the content and purpose for the Declaration of Independence.

Objective 2:
Evaluate the Revolutionary War’s impact on self-rule.

Books  Books

  • How Ben Franklin Stole the Lightning, by Rosalyn Schanzer; ISBN: 0688169937
The author summarizes, in a succinct and zippy style, many of Franklin's achievements as inventor, statesman, author, entrepreneur, activist, community leader and musician-a Renaissance man of boundless energy ("Didn't the man ever stop to rest?" she wonders).
  • Redcoats and Petticoats, by Kathryn Kilpatrick; ISBN: 0823414167
Nancy used her clothesline and petticoats to signal the location, spotted by her son, of a whaleboat that would transport a vital letter about British battle plans directly to General George Washington.
  • Shh…We’re Writing the Constitution, by Jean Fritz; ISBN: 0399214038
An informative, interesting, and immensely readable account of the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Aimed at the same audience as Fritz' well-known series on Revolutionary heroes (Coward), this is every bit as good as those acclaimed titles, although younger children might need to have some terms clarified. Neatly woven into the discussion of what the framers were doing and how they did it are some wonderfully gossippy tidbits that are sure to catch young readers' imagination and make it all come alive for them.

Indicators:

  1. Plot a time line of the key events of the Revolutionary War.
  2. Profile citizens who rose to greatness as leaders.
  3. Assess how the Revolutionary War changed the way people thought about their own rights.
  4. Explain how the winning of the war set in motion a need for a new government that would serve the needs of the new states.

  • Gold Fever!: Tales from the California Gold Rush, by Rosalyn Schanzer; ISBN: 1426300409
She begins with the January 1848 discovery of gold at Sutter's mill andAin comic book-style panels accompanied by snippets from actual diaries, letters and newspaper accountsAfollows the topsy-turvy routes by land and sea to the hustle and bustle of the West Coast boomtowns. Employing such first-hand quotes as "I hate to desert. I am almost crazy, as I have the gold fever shocking bad" from a California soldier's letter to his brother in Boston, Schanzer vivifies the past and weaves her information together thematically (old-fashioned handbill style typeface announces such subjects as "Off to the Diggings" and "Night Life").
