Course Introduction
Core Standards of the Course
Strand 1
Student will participate in personal and leadership development activities through the FFA.
Standard 1
Student will use communication skills to effectively communicate with others.

Student will use critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Standard 4
Student will be dependable, reliable, steady, trustworthy, and consistent in performance and behavior.

Be familiar with the legal requirements and expectations of the course.
Performance Skills
Student will practice communication skills through public speaking using one or more of the following activities: memorized speech, prepared speech, extemporaneous speech, parliamentary practice, group presentation, or serving in a leadership capacity.
Strand 2
Student will participate in work-based learning activities through the Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) Program.
Standard 1
Student will demonstrate employability skills.
Standard 2
Student will participate in a work-based learning experience outside the classroom.
Standard 3
Student will develop a job portfolio specific to their selected SAE/WBL experience.
Performance Skills
Student will keep a personal record/journal/log of their SAE/WBL experience; including pictures, financial records or log of their hours, skills learned, goals, reflection, etc.

Students will demonstrate an understanding of landscape design components.
Standard 1
Identify and categorize landscape plants.
Standard 2
Compile information in preparation for landscape design work.
Standard 3
Create a functional and aesthetically pleasing landscape plan.

Explain landscape design business concepts.
Performance Skills
Design a landscape area demonstrating landscape design components.
Strand 4
Students will demonstrate landscape plant installation and maintenance practices.
Standard 1
Install a landscape area based on a landscape design.
Standard 2
Explain turfgrass installation and maintenance methods.
Standard 3
Describe proper tree and shrub maintenance practices and procedures.
Standard 4
Examine the physical and chemical properties of growing media in landscape applications.
Performance Skills
Display proper tree, shrub, and turf maintenance practices and procedures.
Strand 5
Students will describe integrated pest management.
Standard 1
Describe the principles of integrated pest management.

Identify plant pests and diseases and their causes.
Standard 3
Explain procedures for the safe handling, use, and storage of pesticides.

Students will demonstrate the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems.

Prepare for installation of a sprinkler system.

Plan and install a sprinkler system.

Properly design, install and maintain an irrigation system.

Students will demonstrate landscape equipment maintenance and operation.
