This course is the first part of a sequence that prepares individuals to engage in the servicing and maintenance of all types of automobiles. Instruction includes training in the Maintenance and Light Repair of automobiles, specifically shop safety, transmission/transaxle, brakes, and steering & suspension. This course is based on the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) task list. Work ethics and productivity are an integral part of the classroom and lab activities of this course. Core Standards of the Course
STRAND 1 Shop Safety. Students will understand and demonstrate general shop safety.
ASE Chassis MLR Core
Standard 1 Learn safe working habits and procedures. Pass relevant safety tests with 100 percent.
Personal safety.
Tool and equipment safety.
Workplace safety.
Personal protective equipment (PPE).
Basic first aid procedures.
Standard 2 Comply with safety rules and procedures for working with automotive chemicals.
Chemical manufacturers provide a Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for each chemical they produce.
Analyze the SDS for critical information.
Store and dispose of chemicals in properly labeled containers.
Standard 3 Identify the gasses encountered in the automotive field and the hazards they present.
Water, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrocarbons (HC), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), and carbon monoxide (CO).
HC, NOx, and CO can pose health and environmental problems if they are not controlled.
Standard 4 Identify the hazards and control of asbestos dust.
Asbestos is a carcinogen - a substance that causes cancer.
Never use compressed air to clean brake assemblies.
Understand approved methods such as a brake vacuum or brake washer machine.
Because some exposure might be unavoidable, use appropriate PPE for the working condition.
Standard 5 Assess lifting equipment for safe and proper operation.
Inspect & verify for safe operation.
Safety devices (swing arms, locks, latches, etc.)
Lift points (unibody and full frame)
Jacks and jack stands, auxiliary lift supports

STRAND 2 TRANSMISSIONS & DRIVE TRAINS. Students will inspect, diagnose, and service the basics of transmissions, transaxles, and transfer cases.

Standard 1 Conduct General Research in relation to transmissions and drive trains.
Vehicle Service Information (fluid type, history, precautions, Technical Service Bulletins and Recalls (TSB), including advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)).
Automatic transmission and transaxle components and configurations.
Retrieve and record Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC), On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) monitor status, and freeze frame data; clear codes and data when directed.
Inspect drive train components.
Inspect fluid levels using service information.
Transmission/transaxle gear reduction/multiplication operation using driving, driven, and held member (power flow) principles.
Pascal's Law of Hydraulics
Standard 2 Assess In-Vehicle Transmission/Transaxles (automatic, manual) and drive train.
External manual valve shift linkage, transmission range sensor/switch, and/or park/neutral position switch.
Adaptive values/resets (relearn)
Power train components inspection & alignment (clutch, mounts)
Standard 3 Describe Off-Vehicle Transmission/Transaxle operational characteristics.
Continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Hybrid vehicle drive train.
Standard 4 Inspect and service Drive Shafts, Half Shafts, Universal Joints and Constant-Velocity (CV) Joints.
Bearings, hubs, and seals.
Shafts, yokes, boots, and universal/CV joints.
Check for leaks at drive assemblies.
Standard 5 Inspect and service the Differential and Drive Axles.
Differential housing; check for leaks; understand ventilation system.
Check and adjust differential housing fluid level; use proper fluid type per manufacturer specification.
Analyze backlash and gear pattern. (optional)
Standard 6 (optional) Inspect and service four- and all-wheel drive systems.
Performance Skills
Inspect and service drive train components.
Check fluids for proper level and condition.
Categorize all drive train components.
Use industry reference material to determine proper fluid types.
Drain and refill differential housing; using proper fluid type per manufacturer specification.
Relate Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH) to drive trains (optional).
STRAND 3 STEERING & SUSPENSION SYSTEMS. Students will be able to inspect, diagnose, and service the Steering and Suspension Systems.

Standard 1 Conduct General Research in relation to steering and suspension systems.
Vehicle Service Information (fluid type, history, precautions, Technical Service Bulletins and Recalls (TSB), including advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)).
Retrieve and record Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC), On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) monitor status, and freeze frame data; clear codes and data when directed.
Disable and enable supplemental restraint system (SRS); verify indicator lamp operation.
Steering and suspension system components and configurations.
Inspect fluid levels using service information.
Standard 2 Inspect and service the Steering Systems (parallelogram, linkage, rack and pinion).
Power steering fluid level and condition (inspect for leaks).
Power steering system fluid; use proper fluid type per manufacturer specification.
Power steering pump drive belt.
Wheel bearings.
Electric power steering system.
Standard 3 Inspect and service the Suspension Systems (conventional suspension systems, Macpherson strut, etc.).
Components of suspension systems (Coil, Leaf, and Torsion).
Shock absorbers, mounts, and bushings.
Ball joints (with or without wear indicators).
Front/rear stabilizer bar (sway bar) bushings, brackets, and links.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), relearn, and reprogram.
Wheel balance.
Dismount, inspect, and remount tire on wheel (with/without TPMS)
Repair tire following tire manufacturer approved procedure.
Perform Road Force balance/match mounting. (preferred)
Performance Skills
Inspect and service the components of the steering system.
Inspect and service the components of the suspension system.
Conduct a pre alignment inspection.
Perform a four wheel alignment.
Inspect and service the Wheels and Tires.
STRAND 4 BRAKE SYSTEMS. Students will understand, inspect, diagnose, and service the basics of the Brake Systems.

Standard 1 Conduct General Research in relation to brake systems.
Vehicle Service Information (fluid type, history, precautions, Technical Service Bulletins and Recalls (TSB), including advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)).
Retrieve and record Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC), On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) monitor status, and freeze frame data; clear codes and data when directed.
Describe procedure for performing a road test to check brake system operation, including an anti-lock brake system (ABS).
Brake system components and configurations.
Inspect fluid levels and conditions using service information.
Standard 2 Inspect and service the Hydraulic Brake System.
Hydraulic principles (Pascal's law).
Brake pedal height, travel, and feel.
Hydraulic System for proper operation.
Brake lines, flexible hoses, and fittings for leaks, dents, kinks, rust, cracks, bulging, wear, and loose fittings/supports.
Components of hydraulic brake warning light systems.
Bleed and/or replace fluid in the brake system.
Standard 3 Inspect and service Drum Brakes.
Remove, clean, and inspect brake drum and components; measure brake drum diameter; determine serviceability.
Refinish brake drum and measure final drum diameter; compare with specification.
Pre-adjust brake shoes and parking brake; install brake drums or drum/hub assemblies and wheel bearings; perform final checks and adjustments.
Standard 4 Inspect and service Disc Brakes.
Remove, clean, and inspect disc brake and components.
Rotor and mounting surface, measure rotor thickness, thickness variation, and lateral runout.
Refinish rotor on vehicle; measure final rotor thickness and compare with specification.
Refinish rotor off vehicle; measure final rotor thickness and compare with specification.
Retract and re-adjust caliper piston on an integrated parking brake system.
Describe the importance of operating vehicles to burnish/break-in replacement brake pads according to manufacturer's recommendation.
Standard 5 Assess Power-Assist Units.
Parking brake system components for wear, binding, and corrosion; clean, lubricate, adjust and/ or replace as needed.
Components of the brake power assist system (vacuum/ hydraulic/electric).
Standard 6 Inspect and service braking Related Systems (i.e. Wheel Bearings, Parking Brakes, Electrical).
Parking brake operation (including electric parking brakes); check parking brake indicator light system operation.
Remove, clean, inspect, repack/replace, and install wheel bearings; remove and install bearing races; replace seals; install hub and adjust bearings.
Operation of brake stop light system.
Wheel studs.
Standard 7 Assess the Electronic Brake Control Systems: Antilock Brake (ABS), Traction Control Systems (TCS), and Electronic Stability Control Systems (ESC).
Electronic brake control system components and function (ABS, TCS, ESC).
Describe the operation of a regenerative braking system.
Performance Skills
Inspect and service brakes (disc and drum).
Inspect and service hydraulic brake systems.
Inspect and service Power-Assist Units.
Inspect and service the braking Related Systems (i.e. Wheel Bearings, Parking Brakes, Electrical).
Inspect and service the Electronic Brake Control Systems: Antilock Brake, Traction Control, and Electronic Stability Control Systems.
Produce quality flares (International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)). (optional)
STRAND 5 CTSOs & WORKPLACE SKILLS. Students will be encouraged to participate in a relevant CTSO through the demonstration of automotive repair workplace and career readiness skills. These standards will not appear on state skill certification exams, but should be taught throughout the duration of the course.
