Strand 1.2: THE NEEDS OF LIVING THINGS AND THEIR OFFSPRING

Living things (plants and animals, including humans) depend on their surroundings to get what they need, including food, water, shelter, and a favorable temperature. Plants and animals have external features that allow them to survive in a variety of environments. Young plants and animals are similar but not exactly like their parents. In many kinds of animals, parents and offspring engage in behaviors that help the offspring to survive.

Standard 1.2.4

Construct an explanation of the patterns in the behaviors of parents and offspring which help offspring to survive. Examples of behavioral patterns could include the signals that offspring make such as crying, chirping, and other vocalizations or the responses of the parents such as feeding, comforting, and protecting the offspring. (LS1.B)

• Animal Habitats through iPad Lesson Plan
  This lesson takes students through 3 iPad apps to explore and explain animal habitats. Students will use the drawing tool in Pages to complete two pictures of animal habitats, use Keynote to follow links to San Diego zoo cameras and record their own audio describing the exhibits, and finally use iMovie to record themselves in their favorite animal habitat!*The thumbnail image was taken by Lindsay Stahl at the Living Planet Aquarium
• Animal Report Documentary Film
  This project is designed to help students create a short documentary film using the information they gathered to create an animal report. It can be used after writing an animal report or can be adapted to be used as the actual animal report. It can be designed to appear as a documentary series with all students having the same title opening, or be completely standalone. Students will be learning to find creative commons photos and videos to use in their film. • Mother and Baby Animal Patterns
  This lesson supports the 1st-grade science core strand 1.2: The Needs of Living Things and Their Offspring. Students obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about mother and baby animals and begin to construct an explanation of patterns in the behavior of parents and offspring which helps offspring to survive.
