Strand 5.3: CYCLING OF MATTER IN ECOSYSTEMS

Matter cycles within ecosystems and can be traced from organism to organism. Plants use energy from the Sun to change air and water into matter needed for growth. Animals and decomposers consume matter for their life functions, continuing the cycling of matter. Human behavior can affect the cycling of matter. Scientists and engineers design solutions to conserve Earth's environments and resources.

Standard 5.3.4

Evaluate design solutions whose primary function is to conserve Earth's environments and resources. Define the problem, identify criteria and constraints, analyze available data on proposed solutions, and determine an optimal solution. Emphasize how humans can balance everyday needs (agriculture, industry, and energy) while conserving Earth's environments and resources. (ESS3.A, ESS3.C, ETS1.A, ETS1.B, ETS1.C)
  • Clean Enough to Drink: Making Devices to Filter Dirty Water
Students act as engineers contracted by NASA to create water filtration devices that clean visible particulates from teacher-prepared "dirty water." They learn about the worldwide need for potable water and gain appreciation for why water quality is an important issue for people on Earth as well as on the International Space Station. Working in groups, students experience the entire engineering design process, including a read-aloud book about the water cycle; a visiting water engineer presentation; their own online research about filter methods and designs; group brainstorming of designs (using ordinary household materials); filter construction and testing; redesign and retesting; lab book documentation of their notes, research, plans and results; and a summary poster presentation at a mini-engineering fair. Two design planning worksheets, a poster layout suggestion sheet and a grading rubric are provided. Note: Activities that require the internet can be viewed on individual student laptops, computer lab, and mobile lab or be done as a whole group lesson using a projection tool.
  • Mining and Reclamation to Protect the Environment
Students will develop a plan to mitigate the effects of our extraction of natural resources through mining. They will develop a plan to make use of land in a way that encourages the restoration of the natural ecosystem. They will identify the effects to the environment caused by the mining and research how mining reclamation has been done in the past, including specific examples from Utah.
