Strand 8.1: MATTER AND ENERGY INTERACT IN THE PHYSICAL WORLD

The physical world is made of atoms and molecules. Even large objects can be viewed as a combination of small particles. Energy causes particles to move and interact physically or chemically. Those interactions create a variety of substances. As molecules undergo a chemical or physical change, the number of atoms in that system remains constant. Humans use energy to refine natural resources into synthetic materials.

Standard 8.1.5

Develop a model that uses computational thinking to illustrate the cause and effect relationships in particle motion, temperature, density, and state of a pure substance when heat energy is added or removed. Emphasize molecular-level models of solids, liquids, and gases to show how adding or removing heat energy can result in phase changes and on calculating density of a substance's state. (PS3.A)
  • 8.1 Chemical Reactions Lesson Plan & Resources
    In this lesson, students observe changes in matter and develop models of chemical equations in order to develop a definition for chemical reactions, identify patterns of change that indicate that a chemical reaction has taken place, and explain the relationship between reactants and products at a molecular level. The lesson plan includes an 8-day lesson plan, Google Slides presentation, student reading, and lab/workshop instructions.
  • MOLECULES in MOTION
    Students will observe how a balloon expands and shrinks when heated and cooled (phenomenon) and make a model of what they think is happening, use a pHet simulation to find patterns in molecular motion, and then return to revise their model, and identify the cause and effect relationship between energy, particle motion, and state of matter.
  • Natural Gas: A Lesson On Density of a Gas
    Students will be mathematically determine the density of a gas at 2 different temperatures.
