Reading (K.R)

Students will learn to proficiently read and comprehend grade level literature and informational text, including seminal U.S. documents of historical and literary significance, at the high end of the grade level text complexity band, with scaffolding as needed. *Standard R.4 includes an asterisk to refer educators back to the Text Complexity Grade Bands and Associated Lexile Ranges in the introduction of the standards.

Standard K.R.7:

  • Building a Matrix for Leo Lionni Books: An Author Study
In this author study, students listen to and discuss four books by Leo Lionni. They identify similarities and differences in the stories and then compare two stories of their choice.
  • Camp Paws and Claws & Farm Animals
This 3-day activity reinforces what students have learned about animals. The activities focus on farm animals: cows, pigs, hens and ducks.
  • Completing the Circle: The Craft of Circular Plot Structure
Students identify, explore and apply the elements of circle plot structures to their own stories by using graphic organizers, reading and writing stories, and using checklists to assess their work.
  • Creating Question and Answer Books through Guided Research
This series of activities is designed to teach research strategies. Students use KWL charts to guide their inquiry and publish their results in a collaborative question and answer book.
  • Digging Up Details on Worms: Using the Language of Science in an Inquiry Study
This lesson, in which students research worms in order to create a classroom habitat, incorporates reading and writing across content areas as well as math and science activities.
  • Fairy Tale Maps
Students will begin to understand the concept of maps by describing the path that Little Red Riding Hood took on the way to Grandma's house.
  • Identifying Characters in Kindergarten
Over the course of a few days,  students will learn to identify characters from stories.  Students will identify a character from a book they have read.  They will draw their character, take a picture of their drawing, and create a post in Adobe Creative Cloud Express on their character.  They will then get to present their post in small groups.
  • Kindergarten Lesson Ideas: Code & Go Mouse
This is a list of potential ideas based off a specific technology. None of these ideas are fully developed lessons. Please make changes and adaptations as necessary for the students in your class.
