Reading (2.R)
Students will learn to proficiently read and comprehend grade level literature and informational text, including seminal U.S. documents of historical and literary significance, at the high end of the grade level text complexity band, with scaffolding as needed.
*Standard R.4 includes an asterisk to refer educators back to the Text Complexity Grade Bands and Associated Lexile Ranges in the introduction of the standards.
Standard 2.R.5:
Ask and answer questions such as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. (RL & RI)

A Cinderella Story (Grade 2)
2nd grade Students will be integrating social studies cultural awareness with cultural stories of Cinderella. Students will listen to the Charles Perrault version of Cinderella and identify the main characters, plot and conflict. They will read another version and identify similarities and differences of the two stories. They will create Venn diagrams to look at similarities and differences of their own school cultures and then use Venn diagrams to look at similarities and differences of Cinderella stories. With this information, they will create their own Cinderella story.

Amelia Bedelia Up Close! Closely Reading a Classic Story
Through a close reading of "Amelia Bedelia", students reread the material to discuss text-dependent questions, promoting deep thinking about the text and its characters.

Annotate Text in Google Docs
Students learn how to annotate text in Google Docs.

Arty Smarty: Exploring Various Mediums in Picture Books
Grades 2 & 3Discuss different types of mediums used for illustrations.Each student will create a sample paper using the mediums available.Students will create an artifact using a holiday or historical event as a theme and/or students will match illustrations with the type of medium used.

Creating Question and Answer Books through Guided Research
This series of activities is designed to teach research strategies. Students use KWL charts to guide their inquiry and publish their results in a collaborative question and answer book.
