Reading (5.R)

Students will learn to proficiently read and comprehend grade level literature and informational text, including seminal U.S. documents of historical and literary significance, at the high end of the grade level text complexity band, with scaffolding as needed. *Standard R.4 includes an asterisk to refer educators back to the Text Complexity Grade Bands and Associated Lexile Ranges in the introduction of the standards.

Standard 5.R.8:

Determine the meaning of words, phrases, figurative language, academic and content-specific words, and analyze their effect on meaning within a text. (RL & RI)
  • "As Classy as a Camera" (Learning about Similes with Photography)
    This is a lesson for introducing Similes with photography. Students will learn about Similes, then use photography to gain a deeper understanding and show their learning. They will take original pictures and borrow pictures from online to illustrate their chosen similes.They will be introduced to Wikimedia Commons, a great website for finding openly-licensed photographs.   • How Beaver Lost the Fur on His Tail
    Tookwee?nup, legends, are Paiute stories told during the winter months. They are mythical, often humorous, and they contain a moral. Tookwee?nup teach Paiute children why things are like they are. The stories give spiritual instruction and expose the children to human characteristics that we all possess. This lesson uses this Paiute tale to help students learn about fire myth patterns, wildfires and develop vocabulary. 
  • Poetry Nearpod
    Ever need help explaining poetry to your class? This Nearpod does a great job of explaining poetry in kid friendly language. It is interactive, and helps the students apply what they are learning with pointed and timely questions.
  • Show Not Tell: Similes
    Practice how to show, not tell, with similes in this Story Pirates video from Camp TV. Get ready to get creative and use your imagination!
  • The U.S. House of Representatives and the Gag Rule
    What is a gag rule? Why was a gag rule imposed by the House of Representatives? What are the implications for the country if the House of Representatives should pass other gag rules?
