Strand 3: Civics

Students will learn and exhibit traits of good citizenship.

Compelling Questions:

  • Why are rules important? What can happen when rules are broken?
  • What are ways we feel like we belong and are welcome in our school and community?
  • What are your responsibilities at home and at school?
  • What purposes do symbols of our school, community, and country serve?
  • Who in your community promotes the welfare and safety of others?

Standard K.3.1

Describe some of the rules students or family members follow and why they are important as a member of a family, class, and school.
  • ART, TECHNOLOGY, & SOCIAL STUDIES: Edward Curtis Style Portraits

  • American Founders and Constitution Month Constitutional Fitness
    This is an optional program for use by Utah LEAs, schools, and teachers to observe Founders Month and Consitution Day. It aligns with and supports mastery of many Utah Core Social Studies Standards in grade K-5. Standards alignment is provided, along with resources for possible use.
  • Building Friendships
    These four activities will provide students opportunities to enhance friendships.
  • Enhancing Peer Relationships
    In this activity students will work in pairs while addressing the social dilemma of who gets to be the leader and who follows, a common strain in relationships.
  • I Am American!
    Students will learn about the importance of the flag and flag etiquette.
  • K - Act. 11: Our School is a Community
    The activities in this lesson will help students understand their surroundings and how they fit into their family, community, and the world.
  • K - Act. 16: Family Centers
    This lesson plan provides many center activities that are designed around the idea of "families" and apply language and math skills.
  • Name Bingo
    Activities focus on the importance of children's names and helps build a sense of community in the classroom.
  • Roles and Responsibilities of a Good Citizen
    This lesson plan is meant for Kindergarten eduactors to help teach students what a good citizen is and what that looks like. Students will think of scenarios in the classroom that show examples of a good citizen, they will work together to act out and video record these examples. Then, with the help of adults, put them into an iMovie.
  • We Are All Different in Many Ways!
    This activity focuses on being an individual and reminds students that it is okay to be different.
