Reading: Informational Text Standard 10

By the end of the year, read and comprehend literary nonfiction in the grades 6–8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
  • 103 Things to Do Before/During/After Reading
These tips from Jim Burke's "The English Teacher's Companion: A Complete Guide to Classroom, Curriculum, and the Profession" can be applied to a wide range of grade and ability levels.
  • Comprehension Strategies Using Graphic Organizers
In this lesson from ReadWriteThink, collaborative strategic reading (CSR) is initially presented to students through modeling and whole-class instruction. To facilitate comprehension during and after reading, students apply four reading strategies: preview, click and clunk, get the gist, and wrap-up. Graphic organizers are used for scaffolding of these strategies while students work together in cooperative groups. NOTE: This is useful for struggling readers but does not tie directly to the CCSS.
  • Investigating the Holocaust: A Collaborative Inquiry Project
Students will read a range of Holocaust resources, from different genres and media; use a variety of resources to gather and synthesize knowledge about the Holocaust; work collaboratively to investigate questions about a specific topic; present information orally and in a group newspaper.
  • Reading Comprehension Connection
Students: Interactive text comprehension includes sentences, reading for understanding and reading strategy. NOTE: This website is specifically focused on ESL students.
