Summary

Students in small groups will determine the density of liquids.


Materials

  • salt water
  • corn syrup
  • alcohol
  • water
  • oil
  • graduate
  • balance
  • calculator
  • worksheet


Student Prior Knowledge

Density, averaging, experimental and measuring procedures.


Instructional Procedures

Special teacher procedures, safety notes, and suggestions:

  1. Mass your graduate. (empty)
  2. Add 25 ml of the liquid. You could use smaller or larger amounts depending upon the size of your graduated cylinders.
  3. Mass again. Subtract. Clean out the graduated cylinders between each liquid.
  4. Repeat for all liquids.


Assessment Plan

Check for understanding of the idea of density for liquids. Check for other variables that may have entered into the experiment
