Students fill bags with personal treasures and learn to appreciate and respect differences and similarities between themselves and their classmates.
To have students appreciate and respect differences and similarities between themselves and their classmates. To understand that the United States' strength is the diversity of its citizens.
See preface material from 'Anne Frank in the World, 1929 - 1945 Teacher Workbook.'
Have students decorate brown paper bags in any manner they wish. Allow them to flaunt their creativity. Over the course of the unit have students fill their bags with items they feel represent who they are and what makes them unique. Items might include a self-portrait, family photographs, pictures of favorite things such as food or toys, or the actual items themselves.
When the project is complete, have students share the contents of their bags with the class or in pairs. Have them note what they have in common with their classmates and what makes them unique.
