Summary

The cost of raising a baby is often overlooked. This lesson will have students explore the cost of caring for a 3-6 month old baby for one month.


Materials

Play Money

  • 14 - $100

  • Internet connection or Student smartphones.


Background for Teachers

As this is part of Human Sexuality Instruction, Parent Permission is required.


Student Prior Knowledge

Students should understand the basic needs of a 3-6 month old baby.


Intended Learning Outcomes

Content Objective: Students will understand the cost of caring for themselves and a 3-6 month old baby without family help.

Language Objective: Students will use the internet to research various factors associated with the raising of a baby.

Numeracy Objective: Students will collect and calculate the cost of caring for a 3-6 month old baby as a single parent for one month.


Instructional Procedures

In groups of 4, students will list 10 essential items necessary for the care of a 3-6 month old baby while the parent is working. (Family help is not an option for this activity.)

Students will create a budget for the care of the baby and the single parent.

Students will use the internet to visit sites were the essentials may be purchased to determine cost for their budgets.


Extensions

Students may want to explore the cost of caring for the infant at different ages.


Assessment Plan

Students will share their plans with the class and create a list of items they should have included.
