Summary

This is the first lesson in a series of two introducing the Gale Reference Library The library teacher will explain the rationale for using online databases. Students will explore the data base and answer questions on the handout.


Materials

  • Access to Gale Reference Collection 9-12
  • Computers for each student


Background for Teachers

Using databases takes steps out of the resource process and saves research time when finding and evaluating sources. Students need to be aware of this! Students also need time to explore and familiarize themselves with databases.


Student Prior Knowledge

Basic computer skills.


Intended Learning Outcomes

Understand the purpose of using online databases.

Know how to navigate the Gale Reference Collection 9-12.


Instructional Procedures

Library teacher explains the rationale for using online databases (Whole Group).

Students explore the Gale Reference Collection 9-12 and complete the handout. Teachers circulate to answer questions (Individual Work).

Debriefing -- What did you like/dislike? How can this database help you? What was interesting? (Whole Group.)


Strategies for Diverse Learners

Teacher circulating to identify where and when students are challenged.


Assessment Plan

Completed handout and class debrief.
