Materials

Background for Teachers

Teachers need to have their basic orientation plan set up (powerpoint, lecture, video, etc).

Student Prior Knowledge

Students need to have some basic understanding of how libraries function.

Instructional Procedures

Begin the lesson with an introduction to your library functions. Highlight the various physical sections as well as online tools in your search catalog. Remember to focus on anything that is unique to your specific school. You may have a powerpoint, video, or other presentation tool that you would like to use.

After your presentation, run through the library orientation sheet with the students. Ask them to work in groups of two or three (they can work individually if they choose), to answer six total questions from the page together. If they answer all ten, they can receive a piece of candy or some other prize of your choice.

I often ask teachers if it's ok if I tell them that when the sheets are complete, they can be turned in for extra credit.

After students complete the questions, they can check out books and/or make bookmarks from a selection of bookmark supplies and instructions.

Assessment Plan

Students will be assessed on their ability to answer the questions on the library plan sheet.
