Summary

Students will demonstrate health-promoting and risk-reducing behaviors to prevent substance abuse. Students will also demonstrate independent research to find academic information. 


Materials

Students will work in the computer lab for 2 days on this project. (Assuming the classroom does not have chromebooks).

  • The 7 Types of drugs

    This site has basic information about the 7 types of most common drugs being used by the population. 


Student Prior Knowledge

A lot of students may not know much about the topic due to the taboo nature of discussing substance abuse and harm reduction. 


Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will understand the consequences of drug abuse, use or misuse. Students will also analyze the risk and protective factors that influence the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Finally, students will be find access to information for treatment of addictive behaviors.

Share first video about cigarettes to capture their attention. 

Ask and discuss with class if they knew that happened. 

Talk about what other effects cigarettes may have on the body.

Ask 'What other substances are known to be dangerous?'

After discussing, show video of alcohol's effects, then show brochure of opioid abuse.

Move students to groups of 5 (As diverse socially as possible)

Discuss what the project will be about, and deliver them their instructions. 


Assessment Plan

Students will create a group presentation (about 5 people per group) about one of the following groups of substances:

Alcohol, Tobacco, Opioids, Stimulants, or Hallucinogens 

Each group will have to address the following items in their presentation.

  • Legality of substance 
  • Describe the effects of the substance 
    • Specify which organ(s)/body part(s) it affects.
  • Analyze how/where the substance grew popularity
    • include the origin of the substance
  • Identify community/online resources available 

Each student in a group must present and demonstrate participation

**Remember** You will be graded by your group partners after presenting.
