Summary

This lesson uses the video Design: The Principles as an introduction to the principles of design unit.

Materials

  • Design: the Principles video
  • listening guide from the information booklet that comes with the video

Background for Teachers

Please be aware that the principles of design are the "rules" or guidelines that one should follow when using the elements of design. The principles are balance, rhythm, scale & proportion, emphasis and harmony.

Student Prior Knowledge

Students should have had prior training and lessons concerning the elements of design.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students should come away from this lesson with a brief understanding of what the principles of design are and how they function in relation to the elements of design.

Instructional Procedures

Make copies of the listening guide provided with the video. Pass out a copy of the listening guide to each student. Remind students that they need to listen closely to what the video has to say because the answers to the listening guide do not come in order. Show the video. When the video is over, go over the answers to the listening guide as a class. Have students hand in their corrected guides for recording.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

Struggling students may be asked to list the principles of design on the back of the listening guide instead of being expected to fill in the answers as they listen to the video.

Assessment Plan

Students can earn one point per blank on the listening guide for a total of 25 points.
