Interior Design I
2 class periods of 45 minutes each
Students will find a large, clear picture depicting each of the different principles of design. Students will then write a complete sentence describing where they see each of the principles of design in the pictures they have chosen.
Please be aware that the principles of design are the "rules" or guidelines that one should follow when using the elements of design. The principles are balance, rhythm, scale & proportion, emphasis and harmony.
This assignment should serve as a sort of test of students' knowledge. Students should have been taught what each of the principles of design are and how to identify them.
This picture assignment should reinforce all information taken in the lecture/discussion portions of this unit as well as the hands-on activities that have gone along with each of the discussions.
Hand out a Principles Picture assignment sheet to each member of the class. Read over the entire assignment sheet as a class. All necessary directions are written on the assignment sheet as well as the grading rubric. Show students your example assignment/pictures in order for them to get a clear idea of what is expected of them. Turn the rest of the class period over to them to complete their assignment. At the end of this class period, let them know that they will have an additional 30 minutes in (more or less according to what you feel they need) the following class period to finish their picture assignment. Remind them that if they have questions concerning a certain principle of design, they should refer to their notes for help first and ask you second.
Struggling students could give an oral explanation of where they see the principle of design in each of their chosen pictures instead of having to write a complete sentence..
Each correct picture is worth 5 points. An additional 5 points per picture may be earned if the label is in black ink and block letter, if the picture is cut out cleanly and centered, and if the overall presentation is professional in nature--for a total of ten points per picture or 100 points for the entire assignment.
