Summary

This lesson provides students with an opportunity to observe the architecture in their community and neighborhoods and to share it with the class.

Materials

The following materials will be needed to complete this lesson:

  • an assignment sheet for each student--six different options are available to keep students from taking pictures of all the same architectural items
  • 2-3 disposable/digital cameras depending upon the number of students in your classes
  • a calendar for students to use to sign up for their day to take the camera home to complete their assignment

    Background for Teachers

Please be able to identify picture representations of all of the architectural terms and styles.

    Student Prior Knowledge

This activity should be introduced as you are going through the terms and styles, or just after the students have learned them.

    Intended Learning Outcomes

This activity should reinforce whatever lesson format you have chosen to use to teach the architectural terminology and styles. In can be used as an assessment to determine students' retention for the information.

    Instructional Procedures

    • Hand out the assignment sheet making sure that they are mixed up so that students will get a variety of choices of terms and styles to find instead of having every student go out and take a picture of the same two items.
    • Go over the directions as a class.
    • Pass around a calendar of the current month with the days outlined that students can choose from to complete the assignment. If students have a digital camera at home that they would rather use, address that issue. Make sure to stress that this is a one shot deal--if they forget to get the camera or to take the pictures, they only have the one chance to do it or else it will mess up the schedule for everyone else in the class.
    • Have disposable/digital cameras out and ready for students to take. Go over instructions on proper use of the cameras. Students should BE CAREFUL! If they hurt, damage or lose the cameras, it just doesn't affect their grade, but all class members' grades as well.
    • Once you have developed or printed the pictures, have students choose the pictures that they took and hand them in with their assignment sheet marked and attached.

      Assessment Plan

This assignment should be graded upon completeness and correctness. Five points if they have taken a picture (ten points possible), and ten points per picture if it is correct (20 points possible). 30 points total.
