Summary

With this experiment, students will iIdentify evidence of chemical reactions and demonstrate how chemical equations are used to describe them.

Materials

  • station procedures (attached)
  • student procedures sheet (attached)
  • safety goggles
  • crucible
  • burner
  • ring stand and ring
  • clay triangle
  • forceps
  • glass tubing
  • spatula
  • 2 large test tubes
  • medium test tube
  • one hole stopper
  • test tube holder
  • utility clamp
  • wood splint
  • lighter

Student Prior Knowledge

Students should know what types of evidence of chemical reactions are, know what products and reactants are, be able to balance chemical equations and understand what molar proportions are in a balanced chemical equation.

Instructional Procedures

  1. Run off student sheets and station procedures. Laminate the Station Procedures if desired.
  2. Explain to students that their group will chose a station to start at and rotate to each station during the lab.
  3. Remind students that safety goggles must be worn for this experiment.
  4. Ask students to read through entire set of procedures at each station, then on their worksheet fill in the title, purpose, safety precautions, and description of exercise before proceeding.
