Did you know that insects have been on the earth longer than birds, reptiles, or mammals?

Insects are hard to ignore! They are everywhere in the world around us. There are probably more insects in your yard than there are people in your neighborhood or maybe even students in your school! Insects live in more different kinds of places than any other group of animals. The live in deserts, in forests, on tops of mountains, in rainforests, in water, in caves, and even in frozen places like Antarctica. They live in books and in clothes, under tree bark, in pools of petroleum, and even inside other animals. They come in many sizes, shapes, and colors.

Insects are valuable parts of our natural environment, and because they are all around us, they are among the easiest animals to study. Spend some time in your backyard or in your schoolyard and explore the amazing world of insects!
